Unforgetable
Experience: Eruption of Merapi Yogyakarta
“I remember I
had to use mask because there were dust everywhere,” said Shafiya Qisthi, a
collage student of university in Yogyakarta. She recollected her experiences
when eruption of Merapi occurred in October 26, 2010. Sleman, where she lived
also was affected by the eruption in the form of splashing of rain dust from pyroclastic outburst. She said
that the volcanic ashes disturbed respiration so citizens should use mask for
protection.
Many victims
were evacuated to safe places. However, there were many people died because of
serious burns and respiratory disorders. According to Shafiya, Sleman was safe area where
people evacuated. The victims also were located in a building in her university,
stadium of University Gadjah Mada.
“Since
UGM still in the safe spot during eruption so people were evacuated in stadium,”
said her.
Because
of the volcanic ashes, many places in her campus
were dirty. Thus, the study activities were canceled and the college dismissed
the students. This policy was done considering the state of the campus which
was dirty and the anticipation of the threat of the next eruption.
“I also remember
my examination was canceled and I had to go home to Tasikmalaya because the
situation was in chaos,” said Shafiya.
The eruption
caused panic in Yogyakarta and other places where also experienced the effects.
Shafiya also said that she was afraid of the lava could hit her place but
fortunately she was in safe place. She hoped that this disaster would never
happen again in the future.
