Mbk Sonya: The
Society Can Accept Who I Am
“Although it
took a long time, but finally the society can accept who I am,” said mbk Sonya,
a transgender who actives in community services and LGBT organization.
Olivia Sonya
Aresta came to Creative Writing class on Monday, 5/13, to be interviewed by the
students about her profile. She answered all of the questions from them that
brought laugh and admiration. Her humorous and mature attitude during interview
made the class interesting.
She told the story
of her life during her happy childhood until how she struggle to be accepted by
the society where she should survive. She remembered how she was arrested by
cops for several times, even the officers memorized her face. However, she
never gives up to make the society realizes though she is a transgender, she
does not deserve to be underestimated.
Mbk Sonya tries
to prove that her existence can be useful for society. For instance, on
earthquake 2006 in Yogyakarta she volunteered to help the victims. At that
time, it was rare to find transgender being a volunteer. From that, she finally
gets place among the society and being needed when there is an event such as
social gathering held by housewives.
“Now, ladies and
housewives often ask me to help cooking if there is a gathering,” said her.
Being accepted
though she has different way of life as a transgender is a great achievement
for her.
