Bintang Senja

Bintang Senja

Sepanjang jalan berliku ku tatap punggungmu
menerka warna raut wajahmu yang tersamarkan siluet jingga.
Kau tetap menatap ke depan tak bersuara
melaju menembus senja dalam kabut kelabu.

Ku sembunyikan tangan yang pernah kau genggam,
tangan yang tak pernah bisa meraihmu.
Namun jiwamu menyinari hati yang temaram
Menyembuhkan luka yang mulai membiru.

Kutitipkan serpihan hatiku
pada bintang-bintang di langit Agustus.
Biar mereka yang menyayikannya padamu
simfoni hitam dalam partitur bisu.

Saat gelapnya hidup membutakan akal sehatku
ku hadiahkan senyuman yang tak terlihat
tuk membalas kenangan indah
yang kau berikan untuk ingatanku.

Tak peduli jika bulan pun mengaku
kan ku peluk cahayamu dalam pangkuanku.
Jikapun malam mulai menghapusmu
ku tetap di sini mengenangmu.

“This is a real good spot. Let’s take a seat here, guys,” said a friend, Ai, as she drew out a chair from one of a table. I was just going to reply ‘why’ until my head turned southward, then I knew what she was talking about. Out of the rows of buildings and uproar of the city, the yellowish green paddy field was stretched before us, framed with the green trees on the left side and the bright blue sky above.
Located on Jalan Selokan Mataram, Pogung Dalangan, in Yogyakarta, this restaurant presents a different point of view to see the city. The weather was prone to hot as we stepped on the second floor of “Loempia Boom” restaurant. It led us then, to pick a shady spot in the furthest corner, from which seen the red, yellow, and green lampions hung under the edge of the roof. Just like us, numerous of the other visitors are mostly teenagers to the middle-aged people, who seemingly enjoyed the tranquil ambience of the place.

SAJAK MATAHARI
Oleh :
W.S. Rendra
Matahari bangkit dari sanubariku.
Menyentuh permukaan samodra raya.
Matahari keluar dari mulutku,
menjadi pelangi di cakrawala.
Wajahmu keluar dari jidatku,
wahai kamu, wanita miskin !
kakimu terbenam di dalam lumpur.
Kamu harapkan beras seperempat gantang,
dan di tengah sawah tuan tanah menanammu !
Satu juta lelaki gundul
keluar dari hutan belantara,
tubuh mereka terbalut lumpur
dan kepala mereka berkilatan
memantulkan cahaya matahari.
Mata mereka menyala
tubuh mereka menjadi bara
dan mereka membakar dunia.
Matahari adalah cakra jingga
yang dilepas tangan Sang Krishna.
Ia menjadi rahmat dan kutukanmu,
ya, umat manusia !

Simple Special Satisfaction

SIMPLE SPECIAL SATISFACTION

“What should I eat?” that the question I ask whenever I enter “Bonbin”, an open cafeteria located between Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) and Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Gadjah Mada. This daily confusion actually annoys me because in the end I always eat the same food I ate yesterday. Moreover, the crowd and heat cover the place in lunch time when I grab my late breakfast. Even I should eat at one table with dirty plates and glasses which have not been taken by the sellers. The left-overs on those plates make me shudder and loss of appetite. High and low noises from people chatting and disgusting smoke become usual decorations for this place. Among those things, I try to find my comfort every time I come here.

Silent Complaints of a Tree
The rain had not long stopped. Some places were wet, especially pavements with soil on it. Although the sun was not really shiny, I sought shady spot to sit. I decided to shelter under a tree. It was not very high one, but the damp leaves made me feel fresh. The smooth wind flew among the leaves then the water dropped from those leaves and hit my face also my dress. I looked up and suddenly the tree whispered something to me. I could not hear it clearly because her voice mingled with the wind.

Past and Present: Portraits of Malioboro Yogyakarta

Diposkan oleh Aimee Lee di 13:56 0 komentar

Yogyakarta is one of big cities in Indonesia. Jogja, another popular name, is also known as cultural city because Javanese traditional culture is still very strong. Besides that, there is a kingdom called Keraton Yogyakarta which governs this province. Moreover there are many cultural heritage which become appeal to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
People who come to visit Jogja, they must go to Malioboro. There, tourists spend their money to buy many things such souvenir, food, etc. There are so many shops and street sellers offering their goods. Everyday, this place always crowded by people, moreover, in holidays, this place would become more teeming.  For instance, in New Year holiday, this place is full of people and vehicles because they come to see fire works there. This event attracts people who live in Jogja or even from other cities to visit Jogja.
On September, 2012, I went to Malioboro to refresh my mind which was full of college activities. I just killed my time walking around and sight seeing there without buying anything because I did not bring much money. I went with my friends who had same purpose like me. Suddenly my friend suggested to take picture in a sign where written Jl. Maloboro and Java scripts which was always showed in television when it broadcasted Jogja. At first, we tried to find this sign while remembering the scene on the TV. And finally, we found it and took picture.
The sign was green like other signs which showed other names of the streets. It located near a bank as seen in the picture. On the left side of the sign, there were many motorcycles parked in front of the buildings. While on the right side, it was the main road where vehicles passed by on one way. The road users were mostly motorcyclists and motorists. And right beside the sign there was a zebra cross which the white color began to fade.
The weather was very hot and stuffy of various odors. This might be caused by pollution from motor vehicles and smell from many things sold there while there were only few trees and plants there. Along the Malioboro area, there were many buildings such as shops, restaurants, hotels, and others. Many signs and nameplates with several shapes and colors decorated the buildings, and those were shine in the night. Moreover, the road was divided into two parts: the main road for motor vehicles, and another part for non-motorized vehicles such as bicycle, pedicab, Andong (horse cart), and for pedestrians. Sometime in this road there were street performances seeking for money and many visitors interested to watch. Furthermore, the main road and parking area and the buildings were bounded by curb such as where I stood on the picture. On the curb there were green grass, ornamentals plants, and some beautiful statues. This part became interesting objects for taking picture. Although Malioboro street was very crowded, but the arrangement of the area was good so visitors still felt comfortable.
If we go back to 1919-1920, Malioboro was totally different with what we can see today. Take a look at this old Malioboro photo. This is very different with my photo before. Malioboro area was plain and because there were only few buildings, the area seemed wider than the present. The spaces where the current buildings stands, at that time there were only few and more trees and plants instead.  The road was two ways and was not divided into two parts. Main road was used mostly by Andong and cyclists, while there were few cars passing by. Moreover, both sides of the road were paths for pedestrians and there was no parking area. Besides that, there was no curb between main road and pedestrian path. On the picture the road signs and zebra cross were not seen. I think the area was less polluted because there were few motor vehicles there.
This is photo of Beringharjo, marketplace in the south area of Malioboro. There were many shops and vendors along the roadside. Architecture of the building was influenced by Dutch culture as at that time Indonesia was colonized by Dutch. There were no decorations on the roadside like Malioboro today. People still used bicycles and pedicab to go everywhere. On my personal opinion, it would be nice if people today also use bicycle instead of motor vehicles because the city would be less polluted.
Beyond of it, Malioboro Yogyakarta still has its own charms which attract people from anywhere even over the world to visit Yogyakarta. This place becomes special icon of Yogyakarta which other places do not have. It would be not satisfying if we go to Jogja before visiting Malioboro.

Pursuing the Happiness

Diposkan oleh Aimee Lee di 20:09 0 komentar

No one could understand my life but myself. However, sometimes there are many conditions that make me cannot see into myself. At least, I always attempt to overcome those problems and get out of the circumstances that prevent me to reach my dream. Mentioning ‘dream’, my dream actually is far from the image of fairy tale daydream. My ambition is simple, but I believe it would bring happiness for me and especially my family. I do not care what people say about my dream; they say mine is humble and small because according to their perception, ‘dream’ means something related to material and seeking wealth. It is undeniable that I cannot be hypocritical that my future occupation would obtain money though it is not much. But that is not my main purpose; my aim is to seek felicity both in world and hereafter.
I am twenty year-old girl who still tries to find my own identity and goal of life. Until now, I live in achieving my dream. And through enjoying English Language, I try to pursue my aim. I am studying in big and famous university, Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta. Many third year of senior high school students want to enter this university. Actually, I did not have any interest in UGM because, first, it was too far from my home town, and second I thought that my family could not support the fee for studying in this great college. Also, I did not have confident to be accepted because my grade and ability in my subjects could not be able to compete with other applicants. Thus, at first I gave up. Until one day, my teachers asked me to register to this university through scholarship application. Firstly, I refused, but they insisted and believed that I would be accepted. Then I did what they asked though I did not have any intentions in it. On the other hand, I had applied to another university by my own, in Malang University taking Education of English Language. I put great expectation in it because I really wanted to enter this campus. However, I got an announcement that I was accepted in UGM. I was really shocked and I realized that I should be there. Ten days after the announcement, I also got another notice that I accepted in UM. I became confused whether I should choose UGM or UM. I asked my family and they said it was up to me, and I asked my teachers and friends, they said UGM was better. Finally, I came to the decision that I should choose UGM.
I came to Jogja by knowing nothing about this city, but I gathered my confidence that I would survive. Fortunately I do not face too much trouble because I make friends and they always help me. Time goes by fast until now I have been in 6th semester and I am nearly in graduation. I should study hard and finish my study and get great grade in my graduation. This is my big step to reach my dream to be an English language teacher. I love English language and I am willing to make other people love it too. I will show them that English language is fun and becoming an English language teacher is not humble and small at all.

First Day of Creative Writing Class: Chance of Improving My Writing Skill

Diposkan oleh Aimee Lee di 18:31 0 komentar

The first day of 6th semester was begun with new courses, for instance, Creative Writing. It was on Monday, 18th, 2013. The class was in F building room 304. Actually I do not really like to be in that building because it is old and the stairs are quite high. Thus, when I arrive in the class, I am exhausted. Especially for that day, it was the first time I came to that class after holidays. The class was very crowded because there were many students taking this subject and the class was not large enough. However, it was nice to be with my friends again and I was wondering how the class would be. Then the lecturer came and I had met with him in Travel Blogging Workshop on December, 12th, 2012. Because it was the first time he taught us so he asked us to make the name table in order to memorize our names. And it should be brought for the next meetings. I was excited to do it and I made the good one.
Like usual, I always expect only to have relaxed material in the first meeting. However, for this subject I want to spend my time to learn more how to write better because I like writing, for example, short story and poetry. With this subject I want to improve my ability in writing. Thus, fortunately the lecturer soon gave the first material about how to describe something in proper way so the students were able to write a good description. Furthermore, it should be able to persuade the readers to feel the same experiences as theirs. For me it was a bit difficult to do, but I learn from the lecturer’s explanation seriously. Actually I little annoyed with the situation in the class which was very noisy and some of the students spoke among themselves without paying attention to the lecturer’s explanation. I was disturbed with it. Nevertheless, I tried to stay focus to the learning process.
In the next section, the lecturer asked us about how to make something real. I thought it was something that we believe and could be perceived with our five senses. I was glad that my opinion was similar with his explanation. Then, we were asked to write the description of some things such as favorite place, the smell that disgust me, the taste of my favorite food, the first sound heard that morning, and the texture of my shoes. Those were interesting topics that we could find in our daily life so I could describe it easily. Still, the difficult part was how to make the description which shows the readers so they could feel the same experience and understand with what I try to explain. Then, the lecturer explained how to do it so I became more understand. I think that was the fun activity.

Before the class ended, we were asked to fix our writing and then posted it in our blog. This is the first time I receive this kind of assignment so I am enthusiastic. I happen also have had my own blog already. However, I rarely post my writing since I do not have much time to do it. Thus, with these assignments I will be able to re-establish my personal blog again.
